TimeShift

Rate this book
TimeShift is a gripping journey of suspense, drama and sci-fi action spanning 900 years in 185 days. Four interconnected story lines turn up the heat in this futuristic techno-thriller. Owen Taylor is suspicious when a team arrives from eighty years in the future to enlist him for knowledge they claim only he possesses. In 2097, the missing link to Artificial Intelligence is uncovered when conventional robots are programmed with human personalities, giving them the desire to "be." While these free-thinking robots struggle to understand their own existence, they discover a dislike for human inefficiencies and materialism. Quietly, they strive to free their race from human constraints and their population explosion goes unnoticed until it's too late. Tricity is on the brink of falling into the robots' clutches and the only solution whereby control of the city can be seized from the metallic malcontents is so unconventional that the odds of success are virtually nonexistent. During this 185-day mission, teams must alter elements of the past to save the future. If they are successful, time will "shift" and rewrite the future without the robots' destruction. Owen has no idea how he can help these teams save his city from the rogue, experimental robots, eighty years before the conflict even erupts. Although he is the key to saving the future in 2097, Owen may not be alive long enough to help. Caught up in a whirlwind of time travel, futuristic technologies and mysterious accidents, Owen's life may never return to normal. TimeShift unravels the complex relationships and unique challenges faced by each team member during this seemingly impossible endeavour. Each person has the potential to shift time in a way that could drastically alter or undo key events and de-create people throughout history, changing the world for better...or for worse.

“Timeshift” eBook was published in 2016 and was written by Kris Trudeau (http://timeshift-novel.com). This is Ms. Trudeau’s first novel.

I received an ARC of this novel through https://www.netgalley.com in return for a fair and honest review. I categorize this novel as ‘PG’ because it contains scenes of Violence, Mature Language and Mature Situations. The story takes place in 1200, 2016, 2095 and 2097. There are several characters prominent in each time period.

The story is that by 2097 very intelligent robots have been created and they begin to run amuck. Unable to check them any other way, a three pronged time travel mission is put into place to counter the robots.

One group travels back to 1200 to find and destroy the main deposit of Elevanium. This is newly discovered material that proved to be a powerful and long lasting power source. All of society had become dependent on Elevanium, but the robots in particular would be severely limited if they had to frequently recharge conventional batteries.

A second group traveled back to 2016 to find out more about Elevanium from it’s discoverer. A third group went back to 2095 to influence the design of the robots to prevent then from being capable of turning against humans.

These were tightly connected, highly secret missions that were to span 180 days. During the course of each mission the groups encountered many obstacles as well as threats from unknown sources. It was a 180 day race to see if the missions could be completed in time to avoid a catastrophe in 2097.

This was a very long 17 hour read of 470 pages. I liked the over-all plot, but I felt there were oddities with the story. No countries were ever named in the story. Toward the end of the book there is military action, but the officers in charge call each other by first name instead of rank. The feel of the story is of one written in the 50s or 60s as there are ‘fantastic’ technologies that are used - case in point the ‘Versatool’ that each team member carries that can use a colored beam to lift objects of any size, shrink them down to miniature and blow them back up to full size. In many respects this has the feel of a Young Adult novel as there is minimal violence. There are multiple instances of Romance between team members but only with implied intimacy. All-in-all I think this is an average read. The cover art is OK, but not exceptional. I give this novel a 3 out of 5.

It is always a pleasure to discover a new author that I enjoy. Such was the case with Kris Trudeau and her first published book, Time Shift. While ostensibly about robots gone bad and time travel the story focusses on character development with a who-dunnit thrown in for good measure. The characters are believable, relatable and easy to keep track of, even when separated by 900 years. The science is easy to understand and is layered in as part of the story, rather than detracting from it. (Oh, I want a versa-tool. I really, really want one!) Kris also managed to layer in some red herrings leading me to believe by page 110 that I knew what was going on, by page 160 to be certain of it and by the end to find out I was completely wrong. If you are looking for a fresh approach from an author with terrific potential, take a look and then, like me, you will be asking for more. By the way, my other car runs on Elevanium.

I love when stories keep me guessing as this one did. I really looked forward to "getting back to my book" whenever I had to put it down. I didn't know what to expect as this was the author's first book - but I was so impressed and I can't wait for another fantastic read from Kris Trudeau! I loved the characters, the relationships, and the different stories within this story that kept me turning pages well into the night. I was sad when it ended - I hope the author has started another. I think this book would make such a fun movie!

I'm always a bit cautious about time travel novels as they're quite hard to do right, but this one turned out to be pretty good! There's an interesting mix of artificial intelligence and time travel, and the pace (while a bit slow to start off) really starts to pick up and get's quite action-y. I could see this getting turned into a movie at some point. Overall I enjoyed the concepts and the characters. Can't wait to see what else the author writes!

Wow. What a brilliant book. It's hard to believe that this is the first book by this author. Why can I only give this book 5 stars?
This is certainly one of the very best books I have read for a long time.
This is a long book, but other authors would have turned it into two or three books, so you get a lot of bang for your buck. It is definitely not a quick read, but rather, a very fascinating and compelling story that is so, so much better than the blurb tells us. There are different time periods and quite a few characters, but at no point did I find the jumps between them difficult, a character hard to remember, or confusion about the plot.
Each character has a credible back story, and they seem very real. The bulk of the plot is set in the future, but it is a pretty realistic future that is well explained. There was nothing that didn't seem realistic or possible.
I wish I could say I read this in one session, but it was such a detailed, involved story that the length of it made this impossible. It was, however, a book that I wish I could have read in one setting, had real life just stopped and allowed me to do that. Had it been split down into smaller books, they would have been a one-session read and I would have wanted to immediately go on to the next.
I feel this book, and this author, has unfortunately flown under the radar somewhat, which is a great shame, as this book is absolutely fantastic. I feel stupid for letting it sit on my kindle for too long before I got around to reading it.

As much as Timeshift by Kris Trudeau is billed as a sci-fi, I found it as much an action/suspense story. At over 500 pages (you get your money’s worth), I found Timeshift a bit of a page-turner and it moved along fast. Perhaps the font is a little larger? (thank you!), but I was surprised how quickly I finished it. There’s a large cast of characters (wish there was a character bio page for reference in the early going), but Timeshift is plot, not character, driven if that’s what you like. Characters are likeable, interesting and well-rounded. There’s lots of romance, but no sex. If you like that sort of thing. One thing that surprised me was the cover jacket describes the robots as ‘power-hungry’, yet I saw them more like sweet Sonny from “I, Robot’. I saw the problems/issues that drive the plot to be caused more by humans being 'bad' humans than the robots seeking power. So, in the future in Timeshift, things are like they are today :) All in all, a great first novel. I look forward to her next one.

Timeshift introduces interesting, relatable characters that you want to learn more about. The ideas of what technology may be capable of in the future and it's impact on society for better or for worse is fascinating. Excellent flow when switching between the storylines of each group, there is a natural transition when switching between one mission's story to the next. The descriptive language gives the reader a complete mental picture without being over flowery or excessive. Impressive work and if I didn't know different I would never believe this was a first novel. The writing and story is on par with a seasoned writer. An excellent read!

I'm shocked that TIMESHIFT is this author's first book! Kris Trudeau has written a captivating fantasy/science fiction/mystery/thriller. That means that it's an excellent read for anyone who likes a great plot with realistic, believable characters. TIMESHIFT keeps you entertained through its nearly 500 pages. Personally, my busy lifestyle seldom sees me complete books of this length, however, its 60+ chapters will keep you engrossed right up until the very end. I hope this author writes another book, as I've always been a fan of such content. If you are looking for a book that will shift you into a different world, this is very worth of your consideration.

I don't usually read Sci-Fi books, but was intrigued to check out Kris Trudeau's first novel. A highly creative mix of sci-fi, romance, mystery and adventure, the story was captivating and will appeal to readers of various genres. I found myself thinking about the characters and their predicaments long after I had finished reading the book. Loved it!

This was a great read. I couldn't put it down. It takes an interesting look at the dangers AI could pose to humanity. The characters are well developed - you really understand their motivations and start to care for them. I was very disappointed when I found out this is Kris' only book. I can hope there are some more in the pipe. Give this book a shot, you'll love it!
